Manually checking for server software updates is tedious, but it's even worse when something goes wrong and you find out about it from angry users! Come learn how to configure "unattended-upgrades" on your Linux servers and how to give them the ability to send emails (you'll be grateful you did!). It's quite a milestone when children learn to talk and an even bigger one when they are finally potty-trained! A server that can't update itself or notify you when something happens (or when there's a problem) is like a little baby (lots of work!). In this presentation you will learn how to:
- Install and configure "unattended-upgrades" (including scheduling automatic reboots for updates that require them).
- Install and configure "msmtp" (an SMTP client) to give your servers the ability to send emails.
- How to configure "crontab" to run scheduled tasks, for example:
- If a scheduled process has an error, email me about it.
- Scripts to email me if a certain process has crashed or if a filesystem volume is almost full.
